Privacy policy.
In short: Skeybook is a place to keep the books, lines, links, films, songs and notes that move you. What you put in belongs to you.
- We never sell your data, and there are no ads or trackers.
- Your data is private to your account, except what you choose to share: a collection you share with friends, or a post you put in Orbit, which is public.
- Some features send specific data to outside services, only when you use them; each one is listed below.
- You can export everything, or permanently delete your account, from inside the app at any time.
Who we are
Skeybook (“we”, “us”) is the app at skeybook.space. For any privacy question or request, write to privacy@skeybook.space.
What we collect
Your account
When you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address, profile photo and a Google account identifier. We use them only to sign you in and to show your name and photo in the app.
What you put into Skeybook
Books you add (title, author, cover, page count, reading progress), quotes, notes, tags, handwritten sketches, journal pages, moods, photos you attach, and PDF or EPUB files you upload. These are stored so you can use them on any device.
Location and weather (optional)
Only when you tap Place on a journal page, or allow it for the weather on Home, does your browser share your approximate location. We save the place name, rounded coordinates and that day’s weather. We never track your location in the background.
Camera (Lens)
Photos you take with Lens are read on your device to find highlighted or underlined text. The photo itself is not uploaded or stored; only the text you choose to save is.
Spotify (optional)
If you connect Spotify, Skeybook can read, with your permission, your top artists and tracks, your recently played tracks, and what is currently playing. We never play, change or post anything on your Spotify account. We store an access token so the connection keeps working, and a summary of your listening (minutes, artists and tracks per day and per month) so your history in Skeybook can grow over time, because Spotify only shares your last 50 plays. If you upload a Spotify data export instead, the file is read on your device and only the same kind of summary is stored.
Your profile and friends
To let friends find you, Skeybook keeps a small profile: your name, photo and a handle (for example @rahul1234), but never your email address. Other signed-in users can search for it. When you add a friend, both of you can see the friendship.
Collections
Links, books, films, songs, pins and notes you collect are private to you. If you share a collection with friends, everyone in it can see and add to its contents, including notes, tags and who added each thing. When you save a link, our server visits that page once to read its title and picture.
Orbit (public, only when you choose)
When you tap Put in Orbit, a copy of that line, note, thing or collection is published together with your name, photo and handle. Anyone can see it, including people who are not signed in, and it may appear in link previews when shared. Only your own notes are included; other people’s notes from a shared collection never are. Others can save or reshare what you post. You can take a post out of Orbit at any time, and deleting your account removes all of your posts. Copies that others have already saved into their own collections stay with them.
Notifications (optional)
If you allow notifications, your browser gives us a push address for that device, which we use only to tell you when someone adds something to a collection you share. You can block them in your browser at any time.
Pinterest (optional)
If you connect Pinterest, Skeybook can read, with your permission, your account name, your boards (including secret boards) and the pins on them. We only read; we never create, change or delete anything on your Pinterest account. Pins are imported only when you choose a board, and become part of a collection in your account. Your Pinterest access token is stored on our servers only, never in the app, and is deleted when you disconnect or delete your account. Pasting a public Pinterest link works without connecting.
Things we work out for you
To connect related lines (Graph, Echoes, search by meaning), your device turns your text into numeric “embeddings” with a model that runs in your browser. These numbers are stored with your account and used only for your own features.
Services that see some data
| Service | What it receives | When |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase (Google Cloud) | Everything stored in your account: hosting, sign-in, database, file storage and server functions | Always (this is where Skeybook runs) |
| OpenAI | The quotes and notes from one book, or the titles and notes in one collection | When you Distil a book or collection (book Essences are also refreshed once a day once a book has enough lines) |
| Spotify | Your Spotify sign-in and the requests listed above | Only if you connect Spotify |
| Your Pinterest sign-in and requests to read your boards and pins; public pin and board links you paste | Only if you connect Pinterest or save a Pinterest link | |
| The site of a link you save | One request from our server to read the page’s title and picture | When you save a link to a collection |
| Your browser’s push service (Google, Apple or Mozilla) | The notification text | Only if you allow notifications |
| Google Books, Open Library | Book titles or authors you search for | When you search for a book |
| Apple iTunes Search | Song, artist, film or series names | When you search for a song, film or series, or genres are looked up for your music |
| BigDataCloud, Open-Meteo | Rounded coordinates | When you add a place or view the weather |
| Esri map tiles | The map area being shown | When you open Journal Insights with places |
| Hugging Face, Google Fonts, jsDelivr | Standard web requests, no personal content | When the app downloads its language model, fonts or reader components |
OpenAI states that data sent through its API is not used to train its models. We never share your data with any of these services for advertising.
How we use your data
Only to provide Skeybook’s features to you: saving and syncing your library and collections, sharing what you choose to share, showing your reading progress, creating your Essence, Insights and music pages, and keeping your account secure. We do not use your data for advertising or for training AI models, and we do not sell or rent it.
How long we keep it
For as long as your account exists. When you delete a book, line, page or photo, it is removed from our database. When you delete your account, all of your data and files are erased within minutes, and any copies in our hosting provider’s backups expire within 30 days. Disconnecting Spotify or Pinterest removes the stored access token immediately.
Your choices and rights
- Export: download everything as Markdown or as a full JSON backup (account menu → Settings → Your data).
- Delete: account menu → Delete my account permanently erases your account and all of your data.
- Disconnect Spotify: on the Sound page, or at spotify.com/account/apps.
- Disconnect Pinterest: account menu → Settings → Disconnect Pinterest, or in your Pinterest account’s security settings.
- Orbit: open Orbit, choose Mine, and remove any post.
- Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or CCPA), you may also have the right to access, correct, restrict or object to processing of your data, and to complain to your data-protection authority. Email us and we will respond within 30 days.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by Google Cloud. Security rules make sure each account can only read and write its own data, plus the collections it has been invited to; Orbit posts are the only public content. Keys for outside services are kept on our servers, never in the app.
Children
Skeybook is not intended for children under 13 (or under 16 where local law requires), and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date above and let you know in the app.
